Owen and Liam in the Forbidden City
During our preparation for our China trip we found a very fun book called Alex & Penny in China, from a series of travel books for young children that was originally published in Italian. Alex and Penny are intrepid (junior) spies who have to solve a series of puzzles throughout China. Their first challenge was in the Forbidden City, and we decided to head there today on our first full day in Beijing.
It turns out that the guide books are right, and it isn't a very child-friendly place. We knew it was large - but it was much larger than that! - and we walked a very long way in hot sunny weather. We only saw one place with food, and Liam was somewhat disappointed that we didn't find the throne room (which featured in Alex & Penny's adventure). As the day progressed the boys both developed some blisters, and so we had some competitive complaining.
The Beijing metro system was very easy to find our way around, and we're getting to know some of the area near our hostel. We've had several very nice meals so far, and we all have some more stories about the laneways and eateries that we've been to. Time for us all to sleep now though; tomorrow we get up early for our trip to Jinshanling and the Great Wall of China.
